The Transition

The transition to the Toddler 2 room for Charlotte is not going so well. She is still crying and clinging to our necks everyday when we drop her off. She is either sitting on a teacher's lap, being held by a teacher, or right next to a teacher with tears in her eyes each day when I pick her up. She has gone to this classroom 6 times now, but still isn't getting the hang of it.

The teachers seem loving and nice and I know that she is in very good care, but it is discouraging. They say that she usually has a pretty good day and eats well - I just am trusting that this is actually true.

Today when I picked her up we came home and she had attitude the entire evening. She didn't eat any dinner for the 3rd night and went to bed at 7pm (about 45 min earlier than usual).

I'm not sure what to do at this point. I want to keep her home and protect her and make her happy, but that's not the thing to do. The only thing to do is to continue to take her in hopes that she'll eventually get used to it. But, it is really hard.

I really want my Charlotte back. The one that is smiling and so happy to see me at the end of the day when I pick her up. Now I am handed a teary eyed, grouchy, tired mess.

I know that this will get better and she'll pull through. It always does and she always does. I am hoping that it happens sooner rather than later.

For now, I can't wait until the weekend.

Oh how pitiful! Kathryn was the EXACT same way at that age, and I promise I'm not just saying that to make you feel better. She went to someone's house who kept 4 or 5 other kids and there was a glass front door. Every day as I pulled in to the driveway, Kathryn was pressed up against the glass, waiting for me. It broke my heart!! I hope Charlotte gets more comfortable in her new class soon!

Awww...poor Charlotte! I hope it gets better for her really fast! Did she move up with any of the kids from the previous class or did she move up all by herself? I know for us, transitions have generally been smoother when the boys move up with at least a few other kids - the hardest one was the time Zachary moved up all by himself. He refused to accept he was in that new class for like 2 weeks (because all of his friends were still in the previous class), but eventually he got the hang of it. I definitely feel for you though - tired, crabby children are WAY less fun to pick up than happy ones who run into your arms...

So sad...Declan has been doing better this week, but he has definitely had a tough time transitioning as well. I'm staring to realize we just need to plan on 2-3 rough weeks for every room change. He is doing okay, but is exhausted each night. For what it's worth, Don picked Declan up a bit early today and he said that Charlotte was over with a group of girls playing. One more day this week, and hopefully next week gets better. :)

I'm sorry she is having a tough time. I know you want her to be happy. She will be happy again in her new room, I'm sure. Hang in there. MiMi is transitioning into her new job, and she is grouchy sometimes too :) Everthing is different and lots to learn. Hot tea always helps, though.

I can totally relate. Lora Kate was a princess all summer while I had a sitter at home. Now that she's back in daycare she's grouchy at the end of the day and she won't eat. I guess we just have to hang in there. I wish I had words of advice but I need some of those myself. Just know you are not alone!!

If it makes you feel any better, when I dropped off Jamie this morning, Charlotte was happily eating a piece of toast. Jamie has been crying every morning, too, and is having a really tough time with the transition. He even gets upset as we are driving there. As soon as he sees the church, he says, "Home, home." It breaks my heart. I think it will take them all a few weeks to get adjusted. Hopefully, it's sooner than later.
