Signs of the Season

I don't get excited when I see Big John's Christmas tree lots going up or the Holiday food sections in the grocery store. For me, I know it is starting to look a lot like Christmas when Starbucks switches to the holiday cups.

Wal-Mart was in full holiday mode on Wednesday. Oh, and it wasn't a holiday cup, but a guy on the elevator at work this morning had a coffee cup (couldn't tell where it was from) and the little cardboard wrap said "Darn Hot Coffee". Hee hee - thought that was funny. By the way, random question - do you use a manual setting on your camera to get the cup in focus but everything else behind it out of focus? Whenever I take pictures, EVERYTHING is in focus, and it's often distracting - especially with kids in the picture...

@rebecca, It is the aperature (f-stop) setting on the camera that decides the focus. The smaller the aperature number the fewer things that are in focus. So, for the picture of the coffee cup, I had the aperature at the smallest stop for my lens, 4. I have another lens that goes down to 1.8. What kind of camera do you have?

I have a Sony Cybershot - but like, not just the basic model. It has all the features of a basic point & shoot, but also has most of the same types of manual features as an SLR camera (it's like one step below SLR). So I think I've got all that type of stuff - I just don't have a clue what to do with it! I tried looking at the manual but it is like hundreds of pages long - who has time for that? Maybe I can experiment with it over the weekend. Thanks!

By the way, this is my camera: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665360043
It looks like it has aperature from 2.7-8. I'm guessing it's defaulting everything to 8 then?

Ok, probably. Look in the manual to see if there is something called aperture priority. Then you can change the aperature to a smaller number, like 3.5 or 4, and the camera will adjust the shutter speed for you.

I know I have that (I showed the camera to a co-worker with camera knowledge when I got it, and I remember him mentioning aperature priority, as well as a couple other different settings). I will try that. Thanks!
